Tammy Jo Hays and CR Wood Be N Caicos
Tammy Jo Hays’s name appeared at the top of the results sheet twice after the second leg of preliminary competition, the herd work, at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby in Paso Robles, California. She leads the overall Non Pro composite with identical 436.5 scores on both her horses.
In the herd work prelims, Hays rode CR Wood B N Caicos (Woody Be Tuff x Dees Cat Meow x High Brow Cat) to the high score, winning the round with a 219. She guided the 2011 mare to a 217.5 rein work score on Monday.
Hays’s other horse, SDP Got Fancy Genes (RC Fancy Step x SDP I Got Good Genes x Dual Rey), earned a 216 in the herd work. On Monday, Hays won the rein work prelims with her, scoring a 220.5. The Nocona, Texas, horsewoman owns both mares in partnership with her father, Walt Greeman.
In the Intermediate and Novice Non Pro divisions, the composite leader is Ramona Wold, riding Jules Hickory Star (Soula Jule Star x Turn Liz Loose x Doc’s Hickory). Their combined score is 431.5 (216 herd/215.5 rein).
The Amateur leader after two events is Gregg Lafitte, riding Shes Playin Rey (TR Dual Rey x Playin Acre x Playin Stylish), with a 419.5 (207 herd/212.5 rein)
In the Non Pro Limited, Claire Armstrong is in the lead after two events, aboard Hal O Matic (Halreycious x Miss HIckory Hill x Doc’s Hickory), scoring a 422.5 (213 herd/209.5 rein).
Hickory Holly Time & Kelby Phillips Win Open Rein Work Prelims
The Derby Open rein work preliminaries wrapped up on Tuesday, and the 225.5 by Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory) on Monday held up to win the go-round. The 2010 stallion is shown by Kelby Phillips and owned by Garth and Amanda Gardiner, Ashland, Kansas.
Two other Gardiner-owned horses, both shown by Erin Taormino, finished first and second in the Intermediate Open rein work prelims. Just Wright Lilly (Hes Wright On x RS Lilly Starlight x Grays Starlight), scored a 221 to win the round, followed by Cuttin Wright Up (Hes Wright On x Isabellena x Quejanaisalena) with a 219.5.
The top score in the Limited Open rein work prelims, a 216.5, belonged to Over A Barrell (Nic It In The Bud x Katie Gun x John Gun), shown by Darrel Norcutt and owned by Joyce Diegel.
Three riders scored a 213.5 to lead the Level 1 Limited Open: Richard Winters and his own horse, Bugs Boony (Peptoboonsmal x Shiney Tari x Shining Spark); Winters and Shiners Darlin (Shining Spark x Tari Darlin x Taris Catalyst), owned by Linda Mars; and Witch Is It Chic (Leitachic x Lenas Black Witch x Dynamite Badger), shown by Arno Gorgasser and owned by Gorgasser LLC.
The NRCHA Derby continues on Wednesday, June 17, with the Open herd work
