NRCHA Derby kicks off in Paso Robles; Tammy Jo Hays wins Non Pro rein work prelims

Tammy Jo Hays and SDP Got Fancy Genes

Nocona, Texas, horsewoman Tammy Jo Hays and SDP Got Fancy Genes won the National Reined Cow Horse Association Derby Non Pro title in 2014, and the defending champions jumped out to an early lead in the 2015 Derby preliminaries, scoring a 220.5 to win the go-round after the first leg of competition, the rein work. Hays and SDP Got Fancy Genes (RC Fancy Step x SDP I Got Good Genes x Dual Rey), along with 28 other Derby Non Pro competitors, are seeking a berth in the clean slate finals on Saturday, June 20.  Hays owns the mare in partnership iwth her father, Walt Greeman. She and “Fancy” already have a 2015 NRCHA Premier Event Non Pro Championship on their resume; they won the Hackamore Classic title in Pueblo, Colorado, in May.

In the Intermediate and Novice Non Pro divisions, the rein work go-round winner is Elizabeth Kania, riding Uno What Time It Flo (Uno What Time It Is x Dew It Flo x Peponita Flo) to a 217.

The Amateur rein work leader is Greg Lafitte, who scored a 212.5 aboard Shes Playin Rey (TR Dual Rey x Playin Acre x Playin Stylish).

In the Non Pro Limited division, the high score in the rein work, a 215.5, belongs to Marissa Greenberg and her unregistered mare, Minnie.

Open Divisions

Although the Derby Open rein work preliminaries will not be complete until Tuesday, June 16, Hickory Holly Time and Kelby Phillips set the bar high, scoring a 225.5 to lead the Open division thus far. Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory), a 2010 stallion owned by Garth and Amanda Gardiner, Ashland, Kansas, won the 2014 Derby Open Championship with Phillips at the reins.

It was a great day in Paso Robles for Gardiner-owned horses. Their mare, Just Wright Lilly (Hes Wright On x RS Lilly Starlight x Grays Starlight), currently leads the Intermediate Open after scoring a 221 in the rein work with Erin Taormino in the saddle. Close behind in the Intermediate Open, with a 219.5, is the Gardiner-bred and -owned Cuttin Wright Up (Hes Wright On x Isabellena x Quejanaisalena), also shown by Taormino.

The top score in the Limited Open and Level 1 Limited Open rein work, a 213.5, belongs to Bugs Boony (Peptoboonsmal x Shiney Tari x Shining Spark), owned and shown by Richard Winters.

Rein work prelims for the Open riders will wrap up Tuesday, June 16.
