Lanham Brown Wins Non Pro Futurity

In 2017, Lanham Brown and This Shiney Miss ended up third at the Snaffle Bit Futurity® and now six years later, he’s walking away the 2023 Non Pro Futurity Champion on that same mare’s oldest foal.
Brown and RAB Miss Blue Bayou marked a 218 in the herd work, a 218 in the rein work, and a 218 in the cow work for a composite score of 654 to win the Champion title.
The 2020 mare by Once In A Blu Boon and out of This Shiney Miss, was one that Brown knew he could rely on when the pressure was high going into the Finals.
“She’s a big stopper, she’s cowy and she tries really hard,” Brown explains. “She’s always on your team.”
The Non Pro Futurity Finals began Friday, October 13, with the herd work portion and by the end, Brown was sitting first going into the Saturday night finals with a 218.
The Finals consisted of both rein and cow work, neither of which Brown has worried about.
“That mare’s always been solid in the rein work, so I felt really good there,” Brown says.
After his run in the cow work, Brown had to sit through watching the next 15 competitors before knowing his fate.
“I knew that they were going to have to be big to beat me, but there were several that were sure capable of doing it. I knew I did all that I could do,” Brown recalls.
It was nearly the end of the final set when the congratulations and high fives for Brown began. There was no shortage of praise from his fellow competitors highlighting what he had just accomplished. Now Brown can proudly call himself the 2023 Snaffle Bit Futurity® Non Pro Champion.
“Man, that’s pretty neat. It hasn’t really sunk in yet, you know, it’s what we all worked for and to get that accomplished, it’s pretty surreal.”
