The second leg of preliminary competition, the herd work, is complete at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack & Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby in Paso Robles, California.

Two horse-and-rider combinations marked a 222 to share first place in the go-round. Ashland, Kansas, professional Erin Taormino rode Sugar Frosted Cat (Cats Merada x Sugar Her Freckles x Freckles Playboy), a 2010 mare owned by Craig Sakin, to one of those scores, which topped the Intermediate Open herd work as well. Taormino and Sugar Frosted Cat also lead the Intermediate Open composite with a 439.5 (222 herd/217.5 rein)

The other 222 score belonged to NRCHA Million Dollar Rider Corey Cushing, Scottsdale, Arizona, aboard the 2014 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Good Time (One Time Pepto x Dual Nurse x Dual Pep), owned by Lynne Wurzer. They are currently third in the Open composite standings with a 441.5 (222 herd/219.5 rein).

Hickory Holly Time & Kelby Phillips maintain Derby Open composite lead

After winning the Derby Open rein work preliminaries and scoring a 219 in the herd work, Hickory Holly Time and Kelby Phillips maintain their lead in the Derby Open composite with a 444.5 (225.5 rein/219 herd). Hickory Holly Time (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Holly Cee x Doc’s Hickory) is a 2010 stallion owned by NRCHA Breeder Sponsors Garth and Amanda Gardiner, Ashland, Kansas. The pair arrived in Paso Robles as the defending Derby Open Champion; they won the title in 2014.

On Thursday, June 18, the Open and Non Pro Derby competitors will show in the final preliminary event, the fence work, to determine who advances to the clean-slate finals on Saturday.
