NRCHA Celebration of Champions Begins in Fort Worth, Texas

Nine days of action kicks off with Peptoboonsmal Cow Horse Classic Derby rein work

The 2017 National Reined Cow Horse Association Celebration of Champions began Friday, February 10 at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas, with a full day of rein work in the Peptoboonsmal Cow Horse Classic Derby.

The Derby is sponsored by Aaron Ranch, Commerce, Texas, in the name of the ranch’s legendary stallion, Peptoboonsmal (Peppy San Badger x Royal Blue Boon x Boon Bar), an NRCHA Million Dollar Sire. Across all disciplines, the 1992 stallion has sired offspring with earnings in excess of $25 million.

In the first phase of competition, the rein work, the high score in the Derby Open belonged to the horse-and-rider team who won the Derby Open Championship in Fort Worth last year: Shiney Sparklette (Shining Spark x Docs Sulena x Doc O’Lena), shown by NRCHA Professional Chris Dawson, Aubrey, Texas, and owned by Linda Mars. Dawson guided the 2012 mare to a 149.5 score.

The Peptoboonsmal Cow Horse Classic Derby experienced significant growth in entries – nearly 10 percent – over 2016.
